   Game Controllers remind me of the discussion of what bicycle is the best. So many opinions, so many options, and so many different moving parts to consider. This BEITONG ZEUS 2 Optical Micro Controller is definitely polarizing, but anything in the world of computers and gaming seems to be a matter of opinion. I have used this for a while now and have had absolutely zero problems with it. Part of the contention might be due to the complexity, as this is feature-rich, but there is a learning curve involved in setting it up and using it. But it’s worth the time invested in it. It really works best on a PC. Yes, you can use a tablet or phone, but you’re going to be more limited in what you can do. Connectivity is a point – on a PC you can connect BLUETOOTH, WIRELESS, or wired, but I have found that for me wired is best. Along with all of the customizable buttons for gaming platforms, you also get a fast connect cord. Use it. you won’t be sorry! With the controller, you get several different buttons that are easily swappable to set this up for your platform. It has an internal gyroscope, the smoothest joystick I have ever used, and mechanical buttons. People have complained about noise, but so far that is not an issue for me. There are 6 programmable buttons to customize for whatever you need for your particular application. Using it wired to a PC is just a matter of plugging the cable in, turning the ON/OFF switch to ON, and you are installed and connected. In your SETTINGS Devices it will show up as BEITONG T9 for Keyboard and Mouse. You get a card in the box that gives you a 3D bar code and a web address. Go and download the User Manual. It will tell you how to do everything, including button setup and customization. OVERALL – With a PC laptop or tower this works great. Just turn it on and have some fun. Keeper!

   UPDATE 7/13/2023 – I have purchased 7 of these controllers and unfortunately I cannot recommend the current batch. All of them have popping/clicking noises in their ALPS joysticks that can be felt during gameplay. Lowering my review to 2 stars due to bad QC on the joysticks. They function normally, but the popping/clicking is so distracting during gameplay. So far, this is the best controller I’ve used, and I’ve used almost every single pro controller on the market. There are some bugs, however using the latest firmware for controller + receiver as of 7/7/2023: 1. LT trigger range can randomly be stuck to 39% at max pull. This prevents some games from reading LT input properly. You can fix this by setting the trigger range to 100% in the software, but it might reset back to 39% at some point when you redo mappings or sync to different systems. 2. BT mode with Xinput on PC does not allow you to use FN key shortcuts. This needs to be fixed. 3. The center AI key cannot be remapped on the single tap command. Double taps and other commands can be remapped. I want to remap single tap to be the Home Key 4. USB receiver does not go to sleep when the controller is turned off. It will keep searching for a controller to connect to, as long as power is being supplied to the receiver. Hopefully these issues can be fixed soon, and then I would have no issues bumping this review to 5 stars.

   I’m not going to claim to be any sort of expert on controllers, so I figure it might be most useful if I listed off some of the things that impressed me, and a few of the things that were slightly maddening. What’s good: – It’s not saying that much, but this blows the socks off a Nintendo Wireless Pro controller. Motion control works surprisingly well, pairing is quick and painless (if you know the right buttons to press from the quick start guide), and you don’t need any special dongle or anything like that. – PC pairing was similarly painless. Windows will download some drivers automatically and you’re ready to rock without any third-party software. You can even control the cursor with the function toggle on the controller right off the bat. It just works. – The button modules are very easy to swap out, and I love the option to play around with different configurations. They even include a set with A/B & X/Y swapped for the Switch. – There are two a little toggles on the bottom that let you pick short or long throw for trigger actuation and it is absolutely genius. What’s not so good: – The joysticks pull straight off their studs so you can pick your preferred length which I guess is kind of neat, but unfortunately it’s pretty easy to start to work them loose while you play. It’s still usable, but you can feel the stick becoming a bit unstable and need to pause periodically to click it back into place. I really wish these were screwed on, or just weren’t customizable in the first place. – It is VERY easy to accidentally activate the four buttons on the bottom. There might be a way to toggle them off in software, but it’d be really nice if there was just a toggle or something on the control itself to ignore those inputs. Overall it’s been pretty solid and I’d happily recommend it, especially for someone looking to use it across multiple platforms.

   Let’s start with the good things: The customizability of this controller is awesome. I love the swappable face button modules. The clicky D-pad is excellent. The faceplate attaches with magnets, so it’s easy to swap the parts. There is some real innovation here. This is all positive, but there are some hoops I had to jump through to get things working the way I wanted. I’ll explain: I game on both PC and Switch, and use gyro aiming a lot. The controller is supposed to support both platforms as well as gyro aiming, and it does, but it requres some software changes using the Beitong software before it works correctly. Since gaming on Steam only supports gyro aiming using a Switch or PS4/DualSense controller, we need to use this controller in Switch mode if we want gyro aiming. Unfortunately, the controller has its gyro mapped to the right analog stick by default. This needs to be disabled using the Beitong software, otherwise the controller will send gyro input through the right analog stick, making right analog stick calibration impossible. This happens in both Steam and on an actual Switch console. Turning off the gyro switch on the bottom of the controller doesn’t fix this without the software adjustment. I also don’t like how the lights flash on the controller whenever it receives haptic/vibration input. It’s super distracting and it can only be turned off using the Beitong software. Once the software adjustments are made, the controller works very well. I just wish I didn’t have to install software to configure the controller for what should be basic functionality.

   Controller feels good, interesting placement for vibrations feels a bit visceral at the fingertips rather than base of the controller. Buttons feel good. Only gripe I have is that there’s no way to replace the replaceable front as there’s no storefront for it.
