   In the past few weeks I have become a fan of Hyperkin as a company. It feels like they are really nailing their marketing with this Pixel Art collection. Their pixel art SNES style controllers are now some of my favorite to use with my Nintendo Switch and RetroPi emulation station. It works on my PC and iPhone as well, but I primarily do most my gaming on the Switch and RetroPi. The controller itself is just ever so slightly larger than an original SNES controller, and that’s because it doesn’t just have L1/R1, it also has an L2/R2 and analog sticks. The controller works great on Switch titles, and perfectly for the NSO classics game collection. The buttons have a nice clickiness to them, and the analogs work really well! Having grown up on the SNES, this controller style just feels natural to me. Sure the controller isn’t the most ergonomic but gaming in the 90s, we were made of different stuff. All we needed was our SNES, a lunchable and kool-aid. The Kool-Aid design is fun and really random. While every other company is out there making camouflage and RGB laced designs, Hyperkin is focusing on our childhood nostalgia. Kool-Aid, Kraft Mac N Cheese, Oscar Meyer Hot Dogs, Sriracha, Tetris… They have taken Retro to a whole new fun level. Now if they would do a partnership with Capri-Sun and Lunchables I think my wallet would be KO’d.

   Came exactly as pictured so I won’t post a photo. But I had been wanting a controller to play on my VR headset. Evertime I’d wanna use my Xbox controller I’d have to unpair it from the console to pair it with my VR headset. So I figured why not get one specifically for it. And I also have switch which is cool there’s an option to do both. Really comes in handy. Highly recommend for anybody in the same situation.

   I like the style of these retro gamepads, they are like updated versions of the original SNES controllers but with modern features like four total shoulder buttons and dual analog sticks. I think these are great for 2D sidescrollers and still work well enough with modern games too. The d-pad is very good, better than what you find on more modern controllers, so if you play a lot of indie titles in that genre (or classic Nintendo games via Nintendo Online), then this is a great option. This controller works with Nintendo Switch and it seems to be designed primarily for that system, however, it also supports lots of other modern platforms like PC and Android. So if you are into retro game emulators like RetroArch, then this is great for playing classic 8 bit and 16 bit titles. I have owned 8bitdo controllers before, and this Hyperkin is equal to the SN30 Pro controller. I actually think the Hyperkin is better because it’s more ergonomic thanks to the shape of the back of the controller that makes it comfortable to hold. The design of this controller is themed around Kool-Aid, I’m not entirely sure what that’s about but I do think it looks nice with the transparent red plastic and the pixel art faceplate looks high quality. I don’t exactly see the direct connection between gaming and Kool-Aid, but for people who have an affinity for both will be happy that this exists. One thing I noticed is this controller cannot wake the Switch from sleep mode (at least not wirelessly), which is unfortunate and a feature I always look for in a Nintendo Switch controller. The rumble motors are decent though and get the job done. It comes with a nice, braided USB C to A cable for charging. I honestly think this is a perfect good value for the price.

   I’m really impressed with the Hyperkin Kool-Aid Controller. Whether I’m using the wired connection or Bluetooth, the setup is smooth as silk. The controller has a satisfying weight to it and feels sturdy. The joysticks and buttons are incredibly responsive and feel great to use. Plus, having L3 and R3 capabilities is a nice touch. My only gripe is that it’s a bit smaller than what I’m used to, and the ergonomics could be better compared to some other controllers I’ve tried in the past.

   I love this controller’s look and feel; it’s light, compact, and perfect to fit in your bag while traveling. But after three days of light use (mucking about in Fallout 3, hardly heavy lifting,) the left bumper gave out. It registered a a continuous signal though it wasn’t physically pressed down. I researched a solution but I didn’t find anyone with a similar problem ANYWHERE. So I returned the controller and got another for free.

   As of this review, nothing has gone wrong with the replacement. I still and I haven’t found other documentation of the problem, so I’m assuming, fingers crossed, I simply got a dud.

    I adore this controller. It easily connects to my PC and works flawlessly because it recognizes it as an Xbox controller. Easy to sync, switch to the Switch settings, and super comfortable to hold. Vibration is nice, turbo function has been very useful. Charging cord is durable and instructions easy to follow.
