I’ve been a fan of the series since the very first game, and have played each one to completion on multiple occasions. I came in to this edition excited, but came out of it disappointed. A lot of what makes Disgaea great seems, if not quite missing, just not right. The story, while fine, just lacks a bit of the humour of previous versions. The simplifications in some of the gameplay elements are a miss, and the graphics just don’t feel right in 3D.
The game isn’t bad by any measure, newcomers to the series will likely find plenty here to have fun with, and fans of the previous games will get some enjoyment out of it, but compared to previous games, it’s a downgrade, and I can’t help but wish for what could have been.
