   I’ve played a lot of versions of cave story. I like going back and playing through every once in a while. It’s not too long and the gameplay is terrific. I played it first on the PC. Then I played it on my DSi . I got the Cave Story 3D and I really didn’t like the 3D graphics (the 3D models weren’t bad but the perspective was horrible and it was too dark). I have Cave Story+ on Steam and that’s been my go-to edition before I got the Switch version. Now that I’ve played through on the Switch, I think this version is the definitive version. It’s the best portable version and the best big screen version too. The slight graphic update modernizes it while still keeping a completely retro feel. The controls are perfect with a pro controller. I’m really happy with it and the port is perfect in my mind. I’ve had no bugs or issues. If you’re new to Cave Story, this is the best straightforward platform game of the 2000’s. There are some other great platform games, but they keep adding gimmicks like time warping or stupid stuff. This is just awesome platforming and shooting. There There’s some exploring and lots of hidden items to find and there’s even stuff to do to get better endings. Rather than having tutorials, the game does an awesome job of letting you figure out what to do while giving you enough clues to figure it out. Some call it metroidvania, but I think I’d rather call it an adventure platformer. The controls are spot on. Jumping is floaty, but it actually gives you more control even when jumping. You can beat it in a few 7 to 10 hours, so it’s not too long. Unless you follow a faq, you won’t get the best ending your first time through. But I would suggest playing one time through for fun, and then perhaps use a faq for your second time through. If you’ve played Cave Story before, it’s the same game. It’s got all the same gameplay and secrets just with sharper 720p graphics. There are some lighting effects, but most of the time they’re so subtle that some people won’t even notice them. The water physics and distortions are cool. The see through text boxes are a nice touch. The darker backgrounds make it more playable on the small screen when the switch is in portable mode. I like the new remixed music, but you have a number of options including original. Oh, and it’s widescreen! The graphic update is so true to the game that I noticed it the most when going back to the PC version. The true testament to this update is that I would rather play the Switch version! The packaging for this game is even better than I expected. There is an actual full-color physical manual! It’s awesome and it’s worth reading. The music CD is pretty cool. The double-sided cover is super cool and I turned mine inside-out. If there was one thing I would change, it would be to let me remap the controls. I would love to try putting the jumping or the shooting as shoulder buttons just to see if that could work. The controls are very good as they are, but it would be nice to have some the option. I’m adding a couple of screenshots so you can see how good it looks. And it looks better in motion. It’s really smooth and I would assume 60fps. I know that some are upset that the physical release is $30. Yeah, I would have preferred a $20 price point, but they definitely gave us some extras and it’s a great game. If you don’t want to buy it, the old PC free version is still available online. But I’ve gotten enough enjoyment from this game over the years that I don’t mind supporting this physical release. It’s a great game, and I do suggest it.

   If I had to rate the game? 10/10. You can play the original 2004 release of Cave Story for free but that is just a fraction of what you get with this version of one of the best metroidvania games ever made.

   If I had to rate this release? 9.5/10. Only reason this isn’t also a 10 is because I could have gotten a couple extra goodies (A small bag and a PVC keychain) if I bought it at launch at Gamestop. But this still comes with a beautiful case (with alternate art on the inside cover), an instruction+art booklet which was cool thumbing through, and a mini-cd of the Famitracks version of the OST. The game itself is the definitive version, with the most gamemodes of any release and the switch controller works really well.

   I love Cave Story. It’s easily one of the best indie games on the market and feels well at home on the Switch. I won’t go into great detail on the game here. It’s a 13 year old port of a Metroidvania style PC game and well worth every penny. If you’ve not heard of it, you’ve probably been living in a cave on a floating island for the past 20 years surrounded by anthropomorphic rabbits. The user guide and mini CD were a nice touch. Would have been nice to switch between HD and original graphics like other ports, but that’s just a minor quibble.

   The 3DS version of this is rare as hell. If you want a physical copy on the Switch, buy it now. This is a limited run.

   I remember playing this game on PC a while ago. I didnt have the time to beat every ending, but this version is what got me back into it. Great Story and gameplay, vast improvement from the original, while still feeling nostalgic. Also allows players to choose what style graphics they want. + or original. I would also only recommend getting the PHYSICAL version of this game. As it comes with the beautiful box along with a physical cd, and a manual. Its very rare to see physical games with physical manuals nowadays. I beat one ending but im trying to beat the others. My one complaint would be its too pricey. For a game that came out for free in 2004, its just too much. Sure, the + version comes with better graphics and soundtrack along with local co-op. Thats just not enough for a game this old. However, Id pay to appreciate the developer which led me to buying this.

   Diese Rezension bezieht sich nicht auf die Qualität des Spiels (dies bekommt eh 5 Sterne). Die 5 Sterne sind absolut verdient, da der Retail Version von Cave Story eine Soundtrack-CD beiligt und ein mehrseitiges, farbiges(!) Booklet. Im Jahr 2017! Von einem kleinen Indy-Hersteller! Ich bin mehr als beeindruckt und zum ohnehin Super-Spiel von so einer Beigabe! Klare Kaufempfehlung

   The story is awesome. The graphics make it look like a SNES game, which is not a bad thing at all. There are a few differences from this version and previous versions like no inner wall. Like always, I still don’t like how you lower the level of your weapons when you get hit. It makes sense if your health goes down if you get hit, but the weapons make the game difficult. The game is quite short so be prepared. The game should at most cost $30 for being short and a remake. No Switch game should cost over $50.

    Cave Story is a new-age Metroidvania game with a wonderful world to explore, charming visuals, and excellent controls. Even though it’s an older title, the game stands the test of time with gameplay and graphics that make it a classic worth replaying or to enjoy for the first time.

    The game itself is challenging but fair. Good exploration mixed with some awesome boss battles leads to some exciting moments. Ultimately, this is a modern day classic and I highly recommend it.

    If you’ve played Cave Story before and are looking for a version to play on your Switch, you’ve already figured it out.

    If you’ve never played Cave Story before, it’s an exceptional platformer/metroidvania originally developed as a labor of love by a lone developer, Daisuke Amaya. Perhaps because of that, this game has a ton of heart!

    The music is fantastic, the gameplay is smooth and the story is quirky, cute and engaging. There are a handful of different decisions you can make throughout the game that open up different pathways, levels or story options, so it has a good deal of replayability. I’ve played through the entire game three or four times so far.

    It’s fun. You should play it! Just remember, it is on different services and consoles, so if you don’t want to play it on your Switch specifically, it is on Steam as well.
