- Transform into fairy tale heroes!: By obtaining a Henge License, Bakeru can transform into whoever gave him the license. Transform into famous Japanese heroes like Kintaro and Momotaro to use their skills and abilities.
- Additional features have been added to the Western release!: New attacks Hurricane and Spinning Top, and additional enemy: Lantern Boss.

I bought this game because I am a huge fan of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon for the N64. After watching the trailer for Bakeru I knew I had to buy it. However, after putting in about 2 hours of game time, I’m disappointed when comparing it to my beloved retro game. It may not be right to compare the two, but without a release of Goemon in the US in a very long time, it’s hard not to compare what seems like an attempted close successor. Mystical Ninja excelled in making the world’s areas connected and bringing the characters to life. It felt like a great RPG where you progress through a connected world, with an occasional trip to a menu to select the next major region to explore. In essence, the game’s levels weren’t entirely linear. Bakeru is based on stages where it’s a very linear progression from start to finish. There is no sense of a really connected world. The characters are also only really developed through dialog with animated pictures, and lack the emotion and character qualities that 3D animation could bring to life. The game is fun and enjoyable, but just isn’t what I was expecting.

This game is great for kids that enjoy Yoshi and Kirby. It’s from the creators of Yoshi’s Crafted World and Kirby’s Epic Yarn. There’s things to collect on every stage, big robot boss fights and so much more. I played and beat the Japanese version and wanted to buy this English version so my kids can enjoy it also. This game is all about Japan, from the stages to the items you collect. So there’s cool Japanese facts you can learn as you play. Don’t pass this up if you enjoyed the first party Nintendo games for switch.

This was one of my most anticipated releases when it was announced last year on a Nintendo Direct but for one reason outside of it looking so fun, and that was the development team. With so many of the original crew behind Konami’s stellar & fan-loved series, Ganbare Goemon (Mystical Ninja), there’s a definite vibe in Bakeru that feels familiar & welcome. In a fantasy Japan, Bakeru the shape shifting Tanuki uses his amazing powers & trusty Taiko drum to fight the evil forces of Oracle Saitaro.
The game features action-packed levels full of collectibles, puppy-kart racing, boss battles & giant mech fights. I mean, what more could you ask for?
I should also mention this marks the 4th time I’ve bought the game. I picked up the earlier release from Japan, bought it digitally on both Switch & Steam, and then again when the US physical release dropped…I love it that much & am hoping the team is working on a sequel.

As a fan of Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon from the N64 era, I was hoping BAKERU would receive a US localization and was thrilled when I found out it was going to happen.
This game was so fun to play, from start to finish. So many levels, so many well-hidden collectibles to track down. IMO, it’s an easy recommend if you or someone you know is into action adventure 3D platforming games.
