   Great nostalgic throwback. Who knew a gameboy game could be made to look and feel so modern? Very happy with it overall and was even challenged at times considering I haven’t played this in many years. Worth picking up. Let’s hope Nintendo puts this level of care and detail into upcoming remakes.

   I gotta say, this game has all the elements of a fun time. The graphics are crisp, clean, and cute. A tad too cute for my taste when it comes to the Zelda Franchise. It is kinda like a chibi version of Link. But you can not compare it to more visually stunning entries of the franchise like Tears of the Kingdom, Breath of the Wild, or even Skyward Sword HD. The gameplay is still satisfying and easy to understand. The story is pretty straightforward, and it is just an all around good time. I would certainly recommend adding this to your Switch library.

   Legend of Zelda – Links Awakening This is a remake of the black & white version of the game made for the Game Boy System. The game was released in 1993. Actually I would better state this is a complete make over that maintains the story line and game themes of the origional and add a few innovations not present in the “first edition’ of the game. The music plays an important part in the game and was quite memorably. I was very fond of the Game Boy version and will ruefully admit it was one of the few Zelda game I every finished. How does this version stack up against the 1993 version? It’s like watching a favorite show on wide screen in color when you had only seen it on a small black and white screen previously. The technology and graphics from 1993 to 2019 is like night into day. Sure there is a reminiscences of “that’s not how it was done back then” but then again when you see the graphics on the new version – Wow! The music is still similar but again it is upgraded with the technology available today. You didn’t get much fidelity out of those Game Boy speakers. No, this is not in the same league of BOTW nor is it intended to be – sorry no paraglide here. It a beautiful remake to one of the “classic” Zelda games and as such has lot of play value for new fans, young and old. Now we need an updated Players Guide the game!

   This game is a perfect remake in every way! The $60 price is completely justified because the game was entirely recreated from the ground up for modern gamers but the nostalgia is still captured from the original. There are plenty of quality of life improvements that make this game play and control better than the original and it’s art style is breath taking. Often when you go back and play your old games from a decade or two they don’t hold up and your confused why it wasn’t as good as you remembered. Playing this on the switch is the best way to relive this game without feeling that way. There are a few frame snags loading between the overworks and dungeons and the swamp area has some hiccups but other than that the game is a locked 60 FPS! Also no micro transactions or pay to win or gambling mechanics for anyone who is tired of those shady business practices.

   Never liked the 2D Zeldas that much. This one is much more different. Feels like it has the freedom that comes from playing a 3D Zelda. Nintendo did a good job making Princess Zelda a great heroine in this one. The gameplay is fun – check out Youtube videos of it.

   Update (2019-09-23): I’ve had a chance to play through a significant portion of the game, I have a few notes to add: 1) The frame rate issues are a bit worse than I initially experienced. In the few parts of the game where it runs at 60 FPS, the game FEELS perfect. Fluid, detailed, and rich. But many parts, especially in the over world, there’s parts that just aren’t optimized and the frame rate drops, making it feel unpolished. That doesn’t diminish the overall quality of the game, but it’s an annoyance that should have been polished up before release. 2) This release sets a new bar for retro game remakes. This is a fairly short game compared to modern releases, but the experience and art direction make it well worth the retail price. However, if Nintendo doesn’t inform us of a Link to the Past remake soon, there’s going to be a lot of VERY disappointed fans. The treatment of keeping the most important parts of the original intact, while making minor improvements to modernize it, was absolutely the right decision, and I hope other studios will follow suit here! 3) Perfect game for kids. My daughter has always been a bit nonplussed at retro games, but seeing this release has made her excited about playing the other older Zelda games. (Previously only played Breath of the Wild). This is such an easy way to connect with you kids on something you loved as a child! Well… if you’re of a certain age. 🙂 — This is a straight up, almost exact remake of the original game with a few minor differences. The claymation-like graphics look incredible! The only minor quibble is that the frame rate is inconsistent in several areas, which I expect to be fixed with software updates. If you loved the original, you will love the remake.    Links Awakening is a classic gem from a bygone era of video game, and it’s still worthwhile play for any Zelda fan, but unfortunately while the remaster introduces a couple nice quality of life improvements, overall this edition is a bit of a dud. Aesthetically, results are mixed. Colors are vibrant and there’s some great animation work, but it’s a just a fresh coat of paint on a title that was originally constrained by a tiny GB or GBC screen. By sticking so closely to the original, this remaster feels a bit like watching an old 4:3 sitcom stretched to 16:9. It would have been nice if the world was expanded upon or improved. The developers also use an emulated tilt shift effect, blurring the bottom 10 to 15 percent of the screen while in the overworld. This makes the game look like you’re wearing the wrong prescription bifocals, and the effect gets really annoying when fighting enemies toward the bottom of the screen. Unfortunately there’s no option to disable this. Then there are the constant FPS drops. It gets really bad when transitioning screens, checking the map, traversing side scrolling sections, and worse than bad in the swamps. Oscillating between 60fps and 30fps (and much lower) is unforgivable. It’s even more mind boggling as the game doesn’t even hit 1080p while docked (many segments are in 720p). Performance should not be this bad with such a low resolution, even on the Switch. It really takes away from the otherwise charming art design. Controls wise, also some good, some bad. Having a dedicated button for attack, and two assignable slots (x and y) is a big improvement over the original, but sadly you cannot remap the buttons. If you’re like me and used to “y” being attack, it can take a minute to get used to the way this game plays. There are also some input lag issues, like with the Roc Feather, but then other actions like the sword or shield are very responsive. A couple other smaller issues… For some reason the developers retained the redundant dialogue boxes when you pick up repeat items. Just like the original, be prepared to see a dialog box every time you get an acorn or other power ups. It can be so annoying that you’ll wind up just skipping these power ups. This sounds so minor, but it gets old really fast. Once something is explained, you don’t need to keep explaining it every single time. Music is also all over the place. Certain tracks, especially the Wind Fish theme, are beautiful, but other tracks are just insufferable, like the music that plays after you complete the first dungeon. I actually muted my TV, something I don’t think I’ve ever done since playing some really dodgy 8 or 16 bit games. Overall, Links Awakening is a beloved title and that love is justified as the dungeon design and charm are some of the best Zelda has to offer. It deserved better, like the remasters of Resident Evil 2, upcoming FF7, or even Shadow of the Colossus. Here’s hoping for a patch…
