my drum makes me so happy. i use it every day. this video i attached is from a month ago and i hadn’t modded it at that time. i modified it a few weeks ago using the doll room tutorial and it’s very good! i highly recommend modding it, but tbh it works pretty good without the mod. anyway i love my drum you should buy one if you’re thinking about it. it’s so cute, fun to play with, and good quality 🙂 learning to drumroll has been a blast!
btw it has some good grips on the bottom so it won’t move around too much on a smooth surface. idk why i used it on the carpet here

As it comes, the $70-90 drum isn’t perfect. Sticks won’t bounce off the surface and you have to hit rather hard to get consistent results. I avoided trying to Full Combo any songs since missed inputs would often ruin my runs. HOWEVER, the appeal to this drum is that it can be somewhat easily modded to have great performance. By replacing the foam interior with wood or cork (and some other minor changes), the sensors become more sensitive, the head of the drum allows sticks to bounce, and it can be tweaked to best accommodate your play style. Other off-brand drums either can not be modded or are not great even after the modding process. Hori is my recommendation for any serious Taiko players who can’t afford the $400 Taiko Force Lvl 5.
Just for reference, I currently have all non-DLC songs cleared on Extreme (including 10 stars) on the Switch. I was not able to clear a 10 star before I used the modded drum. For more casual play, the mod will not be necessary.

Hori is known for making sturdy, quality products. Although they are pretty inarguably *most* famous for quality fight sticks, this taiko drum is pretty solid from what I can tell. The hitzones are responsive exactly where any taiko player would expect from a peripheral like this.
You don’t want to tap this thing lightly. It’s a drum, you want to smack it, as other reviewers have pointed out. If you give it solid smacks as you should, it will perform fantastically.
If you want to see with your own eyes how this thing performs, I’ve included a single-song highlight from one of my streams.
Also, if you plug this into your computer, it too will recognize it as a taiko controller, and I imagine you can use this for playing taiko charts on Osu (I haven’t really been part of the Osu scene in years).
I’m an avid rhythm game player, so you know I need a high-quality peripheral, because as much as I use this kind of stuff, it’s gotta last, and when it comes to dance pads and taiko drums – peripherals whose *express purpose* is to have the crap beaten out of them in order to play the games they’re for – you’d best bet I’m not buying flimsy stuff. These things are quality.
Sure, there are adapters you can buy if you want to use your favorite taiko drum you already have from some other console on the Switch, but if you don’t already own one or don’t want to shop around for an adapter, this is likely the most solid choice you’ve got that’s built specifically for the Switch.

Works great with both PC and Nintendo Switch. Have used it with Rhythm Festival and a PC emulator with no issues. It doesn’t roll that great, but you can’t beat it for the price. Gives a similar experience to the arcade versions in Japan with just a smaller drum and at the comfort of your home.

The stock product is the golden standard of taiko drums for tier 1: so a newbie friendly, but still you have to mod it to make the sensitivity mod even better.

I’d recommend going with this drum rather than the cheaper one. This one is very responsive, which is important for getting 100% on those songs. The Bachi sticks feel good to hold and are light, but with just enough weight to where you don’t have to slam the sticks on the drum. This is hands down the best Taiko Drum for the Nintendo Switch and it’s from HORI, so it’s officially licensed. You can expect a level of quality when something is licensed rather than some kind of random third party.

Fast delivery, great quality, and zero messing around connecting it to my Nintendo Switch – literally just plug it into the switch dock USB port and it was auto detected as a controller instantly.
Definitely recommend paying the little bit extra for this HORI Taiko controller over some of the slightly cheaper “no brand” ones seen elsewhere online.
I had originally purchased the generic Taiko Drum Controller from Crazysales because it was cheaper at $95. Turned out to be a terrible decision. Generic drum controller took 2 weeks to arrive, box was heavily torn and squashed, could not attach the stand legs as 2 left side legs were boxed, then to top it off the controller didn’t actually work what so ever and wouldn’t even appear as a detected controller when plugged in. I got a full refund for it, threw it in the bin, then came straight to akiya-switch.com to order the original trusted HORI model. 👌🏼

Honestly, although the sensitivity could be better, I’d rather have durability at this level of sensitivity all the way. The HORI taiko drum does register my inputs as required for songs up to hard. There might be songs that require more advanced mechanics, but really, if you get that far I guess you’d be okay modding your drum to be more sensitive (there are 99999 videos on YouTube on how to do it).
This drum works as expected and I love it!

You can play Taiko no Tatsujin: Rhythm Festival without the drums. But it’s not the same. You can actually drum and get the feel of what the game should really be. They make the game fun. Which is huge. They are of nice quality and are a treat to play with. You can hit these things as hard as you like, they’re not going to break.
One downside is that this is accorded only controller that connects via full size usb. If you want to have more than one of them you may end up having to get a USB hub to connect them to that then connect that to your doc. Since there aren’t a lot of USB ports available on the official switch docks.
This is definitely worth going out of your way to purchase if you want to play this game. Sadly these controllers aren’t going to really help you for anything else. So this may not be a buy for you. But I’m happy with what I purchased.

100% worth it. I’ve been using motion controls for the game (which we all know are pretty glitchy) and this is so much more satisfying. It took me a while to get the calibration just right but since then it’s been awesome. I recommend using it with real drumsticks, it not only adds to the immersion but also has made it easier and more accurate in use. I haven’t really had any major sensitivity problems, it registers most of my hits. My only complaint is that as I’m hitting the drum, it moves forward and I have to constantly pull it back towards me. There’s rubber on the bottom but it doesn’t really help much. I’m sure I can mod it to fix it, just not quite sure how yet.
Update: After reading some of the other reviews, a few people mention putting water bottles in the back like shown in the picture attached. It adds weight and definitely does help with the sliding!

Controller is so insensitive without modification as to make it unusable. You have to hit the drum really hard to register a hit and even then it’s inconsistent. You have to tape rubber to the Ka sensors and replace a foam pad inside with a wooden one to get the Don sensors to work well. This isn’t an extra thing pros do, it’s essential for anyone who plans on playing for more than 2 hours because the insensitivity makes the game unplayable at even a beginner level.
